Mr. Shearer graduated from Western Kentucky University in January of 1964, majoring in Accounting and Management, with minors in Business Administration and Economics. He attended the University of Kentucky in postgraduate studies and earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Louisville School of Law.
Mr. Shearer practiced law in Louisville, Kentucky until 2006. He was admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Kentucky; Kentucky Court of Appeals; Kentucky Supreme Court; US Federal Court, Western and Eastern District of Kentucky; US Federal Court, Southern District of Indiana; US Tax Court; US Federal Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit; and US Federal Court of Appeals Sixth Circuit.
In the mid-1970s, Mr. Shearer took a leave from the practice of law and co-founded an alternative (synthetic) energy company utilizing a coal, oil and water mixture, treated ultrasonically for use as a substitute for industrial fuel oil. He served as its President and CEO until McDonnell Douglas Corporation (aerospace) acquired the company in 1980. The company’s innovative fuel – thirty (30) years ahead of its time – attained national and global recognition.
While in Louisville, Mr. Shearer served on various boards and was a member of several clubs. In addition to the practice of law, he was on the Jefferson County (Louisville, Kentucky) Merit Board for
fourteen (14) years, serving as the Chairman for thirteen (13). This board heard disciplinary issues regarding terminations and/or suspensions of employees in county government. He also served as a Hearing Officer for both the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Louisville Metro Government.
During Mr. Shearer's practice of law, he practiced in one or more levels of the courts in 98 out of the 120 counties in Kentucky. This gave him not only broad practical experience, but also an exposure to a vast number of different Officers of the Court (judges and attorneys), and parties with diverse backgrounds.
As a trial attorney, Mr. Shearer was involved with participating in a number of mediations representing both the plaintiffs and defendants. A number of the cases were settled as a result of the mediation process. He also participated in the arbitration process as well.
Later, Mr. Shearer moved to Naples Florida, where he has served on the board of his homeowners association and as, an officer at his Church.
